The very first Lego set


The first Lego set, called the Town Plan was a set comprised of roads that could be covered with Lego bricks. Godtfred saw in this the beginning of dynamic play, which he believed was essential for youngsters. It is a tenet that the Lego Group adheres to today.


The company acquired a machine for plastic injection in 1947. The purchase would transform its business. The sets that resulted included plastic sailor, plastic fish and automatic binding bricks that were the precursors to today's Lego blocks that we use today.


The first LEGO construction figures were released in 1975. It was four bricks high and resembled a tiny robotic. The peg-hands were different than what we use in the present. There were more than 50 prototypes before the perfect design was created and the minifigure was released. The next step was to include wheels on these figures, which opened the door to a whole new world of playing.


The first Lego bricks


The first Lego bricks were not the interlocking blocks that would make this brand famous. Instead, they were plastic "automatic binding bricks." These had flat tops, with an axle, and an open bottom that could accommodate the wood. They "automatic binding bricks" were made using an injection molding process made of plastic in which melted plastic was put into a mold.


But, they weren't an immediate success. Many were returned due to the poor sales. Godtfred persevered and after meeting a buyer from overseas, he realized the potential for creating an interconnected toy system.


The company introduced its first Lego human-like figures in 1974 The company later expanded into the posable, small-sized bricks that we have today. In 1975, Lego began selling more sophisticated sets for older children and would eventually be known as Lego Technic. The sets contained small components such as gears, levers and universal joints. The coupling and stud system was introduced, which allowed Lego pieces to be linked together to make more elaborate structures.


The very first Lego People


Although they're the most loved component of Lego sets, they were not an innovation of any significance until the latter part in the history of the company. The first Lego minifigures were produced around the mid 70s or in 1975 to be precise.


They were based off astronauts and police officers, which were both more realistic than the toy soldiers already available. This was a big improvement and would make Lego sets more engaging for kids.


This was also the first time that LEGO introduced distinct skin tones. However, it would be a while before they actually got the chance to add female heads that weren't one with a white face. The first female heads that were shown smirking were introduced in 2002 and it's been almost thirty years since they released the head that was coded as old which means they're not quite where they'd like to be when it comes to the diversity.
